This is the VOA Special English Economics Report.

The crisis at Japan’s Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear energy center has raised questions about the future of the nuclear energy industry. Arjun Makhijani is president of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research in the United States. He says the disaster in Japan is historic.

ARJUN MAKHIJANI: “We are witnessing a completely unprecedented nuclear accident in that there have never been three reactors in the same place at the same time that have had a severe accident.”

This week, the chairman of America’s nuclear agency said there is little chance that harmful radiation from Japan could reach the United States. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairman Gregory Jaczko also said America has a strong program in place to deal with earthquake threats.

No new nuclear power centers have been built in the United States since nineteen seventy-nine. That was when America’s worst nuclear accident happened at the Three Mile Island center in Pennsylvania. The accident began to turn public opinion against nuclear energy.

To support more clean energy production, the Obama administration has been seeking billions of dollars in government loan guarantees to build new centers. Currently, about twenty percent of electricity in the United States comes from nuclear energy. But critics say nuclear power is too costly and dangerous to be worth further expansion.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Germany would temporarily close seven nuclear power centers while energy policy is reconsidered. The European Union is planning to test all centers in its twenty-seven member nations.

Developing nations are less willing to slow nuclear expansion. China said it will continue with plans to build about twenty-five new nuclear reactors. And India, under a cooperation agreement with the United States, plans to spend billions on new centers in the coming years.

Japan has made nuclear energy a national priority since the nineteen seventies. Unlike many major economies, Japan imports eighty percent of its energy. The Nuclear Energy Institute says twenty-nine percent of Japan’s electricity came from nuclear sources in two thousand nine. The government planned to increase that to forty percent by twenty seventeen.

Nuclear reactors supply fourteen percent of global electricity. Nuclear energy is a clean resource, producing no carbon gases. But radioactive waste is a serious unresolved issue.? So is the presence of nuclear power centers in earthquake areas like the one near Bushehr, Iran.

And that’s the VOA Special English Economics Report written by Mario Ritter. I’m Steve Ember.

Recent news of Japan's radiation crisis makes many people around the world feel nervous about leakage of radiation and its affection toward health. Nuclear energy brings us much benefit but it's also a highest dangerous source when any problems happen to reactors. Apart from developing nuclear energy, it's more important to anticipate troubles to deal with. Safety must be first priority in any cases. The current problems in Japan are experiences which governments must learn by.

18-03-2011Bob(Australia)

I am persuaded by the futility of helicopter water bombers. Despite a reputation as competent engineers with disciplined workers they have failed to control an entirely foreseeable risk. Japan is the most earthquake-prone country in the world, they invented the word tsunami. In Ukraine the risk was poorly trained workers. In another country it might be civil war under a deranged leader (there is no shortage of them). Two national disasters in 25 years is not an acceptable risk to me.

18-03-2011sun(China)

We always need to search for new sources of energy. I haven't been through the disaster myself so I can't figer out the fear of the nuclear energy. Anyway, good luck Japen.

18-03-2011AmyWu(China)

Chinese government said they will rethink the plan to expand nuclear.

18-03-2011Yuyu Wahyudi(Indonesia)

I don't know about nuclear energy so far. If we look at some happen that rose lately. We should consider for twice in using this energy. We should chose which one benefit or dangerous for us. Why do we not use other energy? Do not call "Modern if it become general murder !" I love progress but not disaster !! Consider !!!

18-03-2011Du(China)

I think we all of us should get lesson from this time Japanese nuclear accident, which is safe and which is clean? We can annalysis failure model from 5M&1E, I think the Man is the first. The failure come from the man's human being characteristic, and each decision is decided by man. Where or when the new nuclear reactor would be set, even sometimes this be decided by team.

18-03-2011pcow(Bangladesh)

pcow Nuclear power is very effective for combustion power but it's destroyed power also very much effective and we are seeing that to Japan. I've found especial Youtube video on: http://fms.nu/erpZUl So I think must be decrease the uses limit of Nuclear power. Otherwise we will destroyed day by day

18-03-2011long(vietnam)

i want to help the people jannanesee,

18-03-2011Mali(Thailand)

Now,Thailand doesn't has nuclear. But in the future may be build.Because Oil and Gas are decreasing.

18-03-2011Palanki Balakrishna Ph D(India)

Aviation did not halt when airplane crashed. Automobiles crash but continue. Space research did not stop because of Challenger disaster. Heavy Industry can not run with solar energy or wind or tidal power which are enough to light up compact fluorescent lamp. Unseasonal rains, melting ice caps, rising sea, impending extinction of polar bears are all the consequence of burning fossil fuels. Weigh the benefit and risk. Nuclear power is cleanest power. Learn lessons, improve but do not give up.

18-03-2011Justice(Taiwan)

God bless Japan.

18-03-2011aly abdelrazek(egypt)

why the article intended to mention Iran ? ?? does it to remember the world that Iran has nuclear bomb?????i wish VOA doesn't has a political role.thanks for VOA

18-03-2011kazuo(japan)

unless new energy is invented, there is no choice for Japan to use nuclear energy . this problem is always troublesome for Japan. but nuclear is like monster, never controled completely.

18-03-2011Hi?u Lê(Viet Nam)

Anything has also left side. if one day oil energy became exhausted.....Nucler energy is the replacement

18-03-2011rajinder Singh Mann(India)

It is very very good and easy to understand. Congratulate for thi effort.

18-03-2011Ron "TIGER" Shamel(United States of America)

We have the tech. to help keep the reactors from melting down. Use several pumper boats used on ship fires, large hoses connected to the pumpers, hook hoses to several Chinook choppers. pump water from the sea onto the reactor this should cool the rods and avoid a total melt down.

18-03-2011

By the way, I think nuclear energy is one of the most efficient way of energy production today. As I know, the energy produced from some grams of uran is enough to supply the energy of a detached house (with average energy use) for a year. Renewable energy sources, like solar energy, or hydropower are not so efficient (and not constant sources).I think mankind should not fear from nuclear energy, we should use it, but we should do as much as we can, to reduce the consequences of any accident.

18-03-2011Fanny(China)

I think Japanese people is very strong ! I admire their character.I am very sad about Japan's disasters. I believe Japanese surely overcome difficult time .I hope their lives will get better! Come on Japan!^0^

18-03-2011Batty(China)

I am not sure three reactors that there have been influenced in my country.I wish we can all fight aginst the disaster.I pray persons who sufferde from the disaster.

18-03-2011Marcel(Brazil)

I'm worried about my country. My country have a big potential to hydroelectric plant, there are 3 nuclear plants in Angra do Reis, Rio de janeiro. The government is planing made more three nuclear plants, one of them in the middle of states of Northeast as Bahia and Pernanbuco. This event could be good to explore another alternatives like hydroelectric, tidal power, eolics...

18-03-2011Winsor

Thanks you on this report, Now, i know a little more on nuclear plant activities....... We know what had happened in Japan, We know what need to be done in Japan, Let get to work.

18-03-2011Isil(Turkey)

Nuclear energy is a dangerous source of energy, and unfortunately Turkey is willing to build a few in the near future without considering the dangers and for the news coming from Japan, the officials are disregarding the disaster there and comparing the nuclear energy with the dangers of natural gas we use in our houses. It is a complete failure..

18-03-2011Hasegawa(Japan)

This problem made me realize what having an easy life mean carrying a large risk.We need to go through about what nuclear energy is really bud for us.how do you think about it ?

18-03-2011Marcos(Brazil)

Brazil has not used energy from nuclear energy industry. The our country use hydroelectric and thermoelectric energy from renewable combustivel. The majority of energy come from hydroelectricity because Brazilian soil is favorable to this kind of energy. I think that must be reduced the use of nuclear energy around the world. Fortunately, here in Brazil the area that use nuclear energy is small and restricted. I am praying for you Japan.

18-03-2011Maki(Japan)

In my country, we have not talked about the future of nuclear plants yet because we have to control fire on the damaged nuclear plants first. But I'm sure that after things calm down, public opinions will occur. It's a difficult problem whether nuclear plants can be continued or not, because we didn't anticipate such a big quake of 9.0., even though we did prepare for some less than that.

18-03-2011Maki-2(Japan)

Because nuclear energy is clearer than others, sad to say but I think Japanese nuclear plants will continue to work. But I want them to test those plants strictly.

18-03-2011tina(China)

I support the idea of banning nuclear plant. We can stand poor life, but we can't stand dangerous life.

18-03-2011Hiwa(Sweden)

There are many other ways to provide energy, more clean and safty like water and wind turbines for example Island's government has a plan installing water tubines under water. These turbines can work with power of tide.Providing of energy is very important but human health is importanter.

18-03-2011Lauren(USA)

I think we can use other sources of energy and cut down on consumption. Reduced the numbers of factories or businesses that demand 24 hrs energy can help to reduce demand. Nuclear energy is unsafe and too costly for our society. May God bless the world.

19-03-2011Tom(Taiwan)

We can't deny that nuclear power is cleaner than gases.Anything is a double-edged sword. We should use the nuclear wisely.Good luck.

19-03-2011maisa(japan)

19-03-2011woravith chansuvarn(Thailand)

Although the development of country especially developing country such as Thailand needed sustainable energy from various sources, the knowledge of people with regard to nuclear energy is not enough. I am agree with the last passage that nuclear energy is a clean resource, producing no carbon gases. But radioactive waste is a serious unresolved issue.

19-03-2011jiang nan quan(china)

Everything has two ways, good or bad.the key is how to use it!

19-03-2011phon sophat,Preyveng province(Cambodia)

I think it is very serious for humanity.please all the big economic countries think carefully and seek some compensations in effectiveness from this nuclear.and Please this all countries should make up a fund of effective human in helping them .the best way please all the countries ,if you have nuclear please think carefully in seriousness and healthiness of human or environment too.

19-03-2011C(Vietnam)

nuclear energy is a clean power resource but it's too dangerous and it can affect the life of people around there. radioactive waste is still a unresolved issue and nuclear radiation could threat the lives and futher generations if it was leaked out or exploded such as in Japan. governors should consider before deciding to build a new nuclear reactor.

19-03-2011princexi(China)

I feel Japan make so many nuclear power plant with a purpose. Although, they have so many power plants, but the Japanese power supply, only about 30 percent by and electricity supply is. And I won't say more!

19-03-2011bernice(China)

nuclear is a new energy in the world now. Although it has many advantages,it is very dangerous when accidents happened .all in all, when deciding to build newclear ,the country should made a compeletely plan

19-03-2011Xiao hua(China)

i concern a lot about humain's future, i dare say, if we continue to expand the nuclear, the earh will sooner or later crush!!!

20-03-2011Masa(Japan)

Although nuclear power centers have a lot of advantages, if they are in trobles, it's so difficult for us to control them.In Japan, making enogh electricity is difficult without nuclear power centers, but this accident makes us reconsider them to live safely.

20-03-2011yusuf(Turkey)

We have other alternative energy sources like sun and wind.We can improve them.I think our planet get head to head with a nuclear catastrophe.Maybe it will be an easy way to obtain energy via this way.But it threatens our planet. We all are citizens of this planet. We all have to protect it from such calamities.I wish my condolences to Japan peoples.

20-03-2011Viktor Lysytskyi(Ukraine)

China is on the RIGHT way!!! God bless China!

20-03-2011OLIMAR OLIVEIRA(BRASIL)

with actual crisis of Japan the world will have to reconsider whole structure of nuclear energy.

20-03-2011Tomi(Hungary)

I entirely agree with the opinon of Palanki Balakrishna Ph D. A nuclear disaster is spectacular indeed, but the use of fossil energy is also harmful. The oil disaster in the last year near Mexico was multiple harmful, and every year a great amount oil spread over the surface of oceans causing the destroy of ecosystems. Maybe we -in my opinion- would rather prefer the nuclear energy and take it more safe, alternative energy resources appear few to satisfy the greediness of mankind for energy.

20-03-2011Ali Jan(afghanistan)

I am realy worry about current situation of Japan , because it not only threaten the people of Japan . But threatreen the people of world via Radio Active 's ray

21-03-2011Kimsreyneang(Cambodia)

I was very sorry to Japaness people. Disasters in Japan are experiences for scientists to deal with natural dissaters and modern technologies. Please include me among those who share your sorrow at this sad time. Good luck Japaness!

21-03-2011Tommy Nguyen(VietNam)

Our country also is preparing to raise Nuclear Power plants in Ninh Thuan province! clear power source but if have earthquake is extreme disaster. We all pray for Japanese soon recover, strong economy!

21-03-2011Dang Cong Huan(Viet Nam)

In future, all industries will strongly develop, although we apply modern technologies, energy saving technologies but we still need a lot of electricity power, old methods are not only low efficiency, but also they pollute and destroy environment. Nowaday, nuclear power solutions is the best choice, but we need a complete plan. Beside that, we have to prepare a safest solution when accidents happen.

21-03-2011mzcslee(from china)

With the increas of total population on this planet and promotion of living standards, human needs more and more energy to fill a endless blackhole. I think it is hard to abandon nuclear energy resource, such a nice, unexhautible, clean energy resource .

21-03-2011Kay(CHINA)

whatever to do ,we should protect our earth.

21-03-2011mzcslee(from china)

Although there were not many tragic accident happened in human history so far, two scenarios (one in US, other in Soviet union) were so unhappy memories deeply in people mind. Currently the diaster happening in Japan is telling us that how dreadful the energy resource can be, and that the critical of location where nuclear power plant should be constructed.

21-03-2011mzcslee(from china)

Japan is obvious not a perfect place for nuclear power plant, for that the whole nation is on or close to faults. Actually, I got idea that there shoudl be someday in the future that all people of this world share the same electricity supply network. All nuclear power plants should be build in geographic safe places where very few people dwell. .

21-03-2011mzcslee(from china)

For this consideration, Russia may donate a piece of place in its east siberia to construct power plants. As the repayment, all people pay the companies for the electricity they consumed. Of course, all the nuclear power plants should employ the newest tech which also should be undergo continuously updating.

21-03-2011mzcslee(from China)

For example, there should be at least 3-4 sets of backup cooling system, all of which should be able resist to10 magtitude earthquake. All the reactors should be able to shut down automatically in the first 10 seconds once any possible diaster is approaching

21-03-2011(Chinese in Germany)

The potential problem of building nuclear centers is that it could pollute all the people in the earth once just in one country the nuclear reactors exploded.

21-03-2011(CHINA)

i really think this earthquake that is the disaster of human begins , what all we should and must learn is how we can solve it hand in hand ,,,not say unuseful words and take the bad mood to each other,,but the best is we are just doing it

nuclear industry. According to this accident in Japan, Germany closed 7 nuclear industries and Europ Union which covers 27 nations has been continually considering this issue. However, as to developing countries like China and India, they planed to expand more nuclear industries in the future. Especially, China is going to build 25 nuclear energy industries in next few years.

23-03-2011Bruno Do(VietNam)

Nuclear accident in Japan is considered as a precedent event. But we shouldn't think it must be rejected all over the world. Alternatively, we must find solution for reducing its bad impacts in the future.
